Cards, only cards, nothing but cards

SPOILER WARNING:  While I’m careful not to give away too many specifics about a cache, it is always possible I might mention details you don’t want to know. Proceed accordingly.

Hershey Center

Hershey Centre

I made a repeat visit to GC1Q651 Cards, only cards, nothing but cards after running some errands Saturday morning. I really wanted to drop the NJD travel bug there although its mission is to get to a New Jersey Devils playoff game.  Since I couldn’t get it close to one of those I thought this cache being next door to the Hershey Centre would be ideal. NHL stars of the future pass through there.

The Cache and my Items

The route to the cache proved to be wetter than the last trip. It rained earlier in the week, but this time I was wearing boots.  I still had to find a way around some of the deeper water which didn’t take long. I quickly homed in on the cache and easily found it. The cache is pretty full with all kinds of cards. I added two stained glass supply store discount cards, and I managed to squeeze the travel bug in. Hopefully the next person will move the bug otherwise there won’t be room for anything else.

Devon and Terrain

Devon and Terrain

We paid a repeat visit to GCNX9B Credit River Surprise after dinner last night after I had a eureka moment earlier in the day. I knew where the cache must be, and sure enough there it was in the second place I checked. It is quite cleverly hidden (I won’t give the secret away!), but this time only took a few minutes to get it. We had to be a bit careful as someone else was taking photos of the mill. He seemed to be quite interested in close up details, and the cache site is hidden from most vantage points by bushes and the mill structure.

Deer Hunter

After seeing deer while geocaching by the Credit River last weekend, my 3 year old daughter Devon wanted to see some for herself. We set off on a drizzling Sunday morning and spent an hour exploring the area. The area used to be a farm and there is lots of evidence of old buildings, fences (including barb wire), and equipment scattered about the place. I took a picture of Devon beside one rusty but impressive machine.

I saw deer three times during the hour. Five or six of them were trying to stay out of view, but I saw them behind the bushes about 30 metres away. Devon missed them, so we followed their tracks to get a better look. I got another glimpse of them a little later. They were doubling back on us again about 30 metres away behind some cover. So we circled again and were lucky to to see two clearly through some trees about 20 metres away. One stood still long enough for Devon to get a good look while it stared back, but it moved before I could get my camera up. Another deer followed it, and I managed to get this fuzzy photo as it passed behind the trees before disappearing over a hill.

No Find Weekend

Ready for the Cache

It was one of those weekends when things didn’t go to plan. I have these two travel bugs that need to be dropped off somewhere, so I planned what  I thought would be a couple of quick finds.

So Near, Yet So Far

Credit River - Approaching Cache

SPOILER WARNING:  While I’m careful not to give away too many specifics about a cache, it is always possible I might mention details you don’t want to know. Proceed accordingly.

A week ago, I set out to find GCZBQD So near, yet fo far! This cache is only about half a mile from my home as the crow flies, but to approach it I went to a trail head a couple of miles away that lead down into the valley by the Credit River from the opposite side of the river from my home.

I was expecting some tough going as the cache has only had 49 finds since November 2006, but I was pleasantly surprised. April is definitely the time to tackle caches in areas where a lot of plants will grow during the summer. While there was a lot of evidence of last year’s plants, most of it was dried out and flattened down making progress quite easy. The only tricky part was crossing a creek, but there was a conveniently located log to make the crossing.

Welcome

I created GoCaching .ca to be my online diary of geocaching experiences. Visit regularly to see what I’ve been up to. This weekend I’m planning to tackle a fairly challenging cache to get to for someone with my minimal geocaching and outdoors experience. My next post will be about that adventure. A few more posts will talk about the experiences I’ve had so far leading up to that cache.
